An Indian military spokesman stated on Saturday that a naval destroyer had apprehended the stolen Ruen cargo ship and demanded the Somali pirates on board to surrender, according to Reuters.
Without giving more information, the navy spokesperson stated that on Friday, the pirates who were suspected of hijacking the Maltese-flagged bulk cargo ship on December 14 started shooting at the naval ship in international seas.
The navy had demanded that the pirates surrender, free the ship, and release any people they might have detained.
This week off the coast of Somalia, a cargo ship flying the flag of Bangladesh was thought to have been taken over by Somali pirates, who took over the Ruen in December, the European Union naval force stated on Thursday.
Since 2017, there has not been a successful kidnapping of a merchant ship by Somali pirates until the Ruen was taken over.
According to Indian officials, the Indian Navy has documented at least 17 instances of attempted hijacking, hijacking, or suspicious approaches since December.
