ISLAMABAD: Pakistani President Arif Alvi said that the adoption of modern agriculture technology is inevitable for his country to cope with the challenge of climate change.
“By pushing farmers to adopt modern agriculture technology, Pakistan can also feed the world. In this regard, effective decision-making is needed as the country is blessed with abundant natural resources,” he said during a seminar on climate change held here Tuesday.
“Pakistan has around 150 million acre-feet of water, which would be sufficient to meet its needs if modern agriculture techniques like spray and drip irrigation are adopted and flood irrigation is done away with,” the president said.
Emphasizing the implementation of national water policy and other relevant legislation, Alvi said that a pricing mechanism could also lead to water conservation.
Besides taking other actions to fight climate change, the president said that Pakistan has achieved recognition around the globe through massive tree plantation to restore the country’s forests.
