Uncertainty hangs over the upcoming general elections, as the secretary of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Omar Hamid Khan, has reportedly suddenly fallen seriously ill and offered to resign.
According to unconfirmed sources, while Hamid hasn’t officially submitted a written resignation yet, an important meeting was held between him and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja to discuss the situation. It is unclear whether Hamid’s illness, said to be a lung infection, will affect his ability to oversee the crucial elections.
The sources say that during the meeting, Hamid excused from working owing to his illness. He is reported to have said that his illness might affect his performance, especially when elections were near.
Concerns are mounting that the elections could be hampered by Hamid’s absence, considering his vital role in organizing and managing the polls. Sources claim that Hamid offered to step down to ensure no disruption, but the CEC reportedly advised him to prioritize his health and seek the best treatment until recovery.
The lack of official confirmation and conflicting reports add to the confusion surrounding the issue. The election commission has remained tight-lipped, and no formal statement has been issued regarding Hamid’s health or potential resignation.
With elections drawing closer, this sudden development casts a shadow over the electoral process. Whether Hamid remains in his position or decides to step down, ensuring transparency and timely communication from the Election Commission is crucial to allay public concerns and maintain confidence in the democratic system.
It should be noted that Hamid has been made a party on behalf of the election commission in the PTI’s contempt of court case before the Supreme Court regarding the non-provision of a level playing field despite court orders.
