KABUL: The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) handed over 16 ambulances to the Red Crescent Society of Afghanistan on Tuesday.

Expressing gratitude over receiving the assistance, Mawlawi Matiul Haq Khalis, chairman of the Afghan Red Crescent Society, said that the contribution would help provide better services to the patients in health centers.

Afghan hospitals and health clinics, according to officials, are in scarcity of ambulances as people especially those in the countryside often complain that it takes hours to take a patient to the hospital due to a lack of ambulances and congested roads.

The Afghan Red Crescent Society would also receive 22 more ambulances in the near future, the official added.

The Taliban-led caretaker government has vowed to improve public services including the health sector throughout Afghanistan, as people lack adequate health access in most parts of the war-torn country.
