UNITED NATIONS: Munir Akram, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations, has commended China’s responsible approach to addressing conflicts within the UN Security Council, a body dedicated to upholding international peace and security.

Noting China is a major country, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Akram told Xinhua in an exclusive interview on the second day of China’s presidency of the Security Council for November that “we see China acting responsibly in the Security Council.”

“China has always advocated respect for the fundamental principles of the UN Charter. We think this is the right approach,” said the ambassador, stressing that China has also indicated that “the best solution is dialogue and cooperation.”

“China has emphasized the need for development as a basis to avoid conflicts and to prevent conflicts. These are responsible approaches,” he added.

The seasoned diplomat noted that on the Ukraine crisis, China advocated dialogue for resolution. “It has made a proposal for a peace talks and to hold the fighting.”

“Similarly, on the Middle East issue we are facing, China has also called for an immediate cessation of hostilities,” said Akram.

Pakistan agrees with China’s approach, Akram said. “We support its efforts in the Security Council to bring peace in Ukraine, in the Middle East, and many other hot spots around the world.”

“The international community must give priority to peace and bring a cessation of hostilities as soon as possible,” said Akram, stressing priority should be given to “human beings, to the welfare of the people and to the plight of the civilian populations who are caught up in these conflicts” and to “promoting their rights, to safeguarding especially women and children who are caught in these conflicts.”

Akram said that the Security Council should “listen to the voice of the majority of countries,” as many countries have expressed disappointment and dissatisfaction with the Security Council’s inability to adopt resolutions concerning the Ukraine and Gaza crises.

Speaking of China-Pakistan relations, Akram voiced confidence that the relationship “will improve and continue to strengthen in the future.”

“We share convergence of views and positions on the international order. We both seek peaceful resolution of conflicts. And we have great common interest in promoting peace and security in our region and peace and development in our region,” the envoy said.

“Our cooperation and relationship will continue to grow. We are taking concrete actions to promote both peace, security and development,” he said. “Our cooperation is a win-win cooperation for not only the two countries, but also for the entire region.”
