Senate ‘restores’ student unions in Islamabad universities

1 min read

Senate Standing Committee on Education met under the chair of Senator Irfan Siddiqui and approved Islamabad Capital Student Union Bill 2023 in ‘principle’, urging committee members to submit suggestions in a week.

A briefing on Islamabad Capital Student Union Bill 2023 in the Standing Committee meeting was held Wednesday.

Senator Behrmand Tangi commented that lack of student unions in educational institutions creates ‘problem’ in education in the universities. She said the University of Peshawar was closed for 3 months due to protests.

“The purpose of this bill is to give rights to the students. This is not a political bill. With this bill, the problems of teaching in the university will be solved,” she said.

Senator Jam Mehtab Dahar commented unionization will reduce protests in universities.

However, a Higher Education Commission (HEC) representative in the meeting proposed councils instead of students’ unions.
