SHENYANG: A total of 63 county-level regions in northeast China’s Liaoning have activated emergency response for flood control as heavy rainfall lashed the province, triggering flooding of rivers and forcing the evacuation of residents.
In Liaoning, water levels in four reservoirs have exceeded flood alarm thresholds, prompting the discharge of floodwater, the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters said Tuesday.
Affected by torrential rains, the current storage capacity of 37 large reservoirs in Liaoning has exceeded 19.32 billion cubic meters, some 3.6 billion cubic meters more than the same period in previous years.
The local public security department has mobilized police officials to assist in the evacuation of 551 individuals. Meanwhile, 2,153 personnel and 690 vehicles have been deployed by the State Grid Liaoning Electric Power Supply Co., Ltd. for power maintenance.
From 8 p.m. Sunday to 8 a.m. Tuesday, the average precipitation in Liaoning reached 30.1 mm, with the highest hourly rainfall of 81.9 mm recorded in Zhuanghe City, according to the provincial meteorological authorities.
Local authorities said persistent rainfall can elevate the risk of secondary disasters such as flash floods, landslides, and urban and rural waterlogging.
