World No Tobacco Day: 4 dangers of passive smoking, experts warn

3 min read

Passive smoking, also known as secondhand smoke, refers to inhaling smoke emitted by someone else’s tobacco products. Although people who do not actively smoke may believe that they are not affected by the harmful effects of tobacco, passive smoking poses significant risks to their health. Exposure to secondhand smoke has been linked to several diseases.

Research has linked passive smoking to a variety of health problems, including increased risk of breathing problems, cardiovascular disease and lung cancer. To protect individuals from the harmful effects of passive smoking, creating smoke-free environments and promoting awareness of the dangers associated with exposure to secondhand smoke are crucial.

Dr. Nikhil Modi, Senior Consultant, Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital explains the health conditions caused by passive smoking and what precautions should be taken.

World No Tobacco Day 2023: Health diseases caused by passive smoking. Dr. explained four major health diseases due to passive smoking.

Respiratory problems

One of the most prominent health risks of passive smoking is an increased chance of developing respiratory problems, says Dr Modi. Studies have shown that non-smokers who are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke have a higher risk of respiratory infections, including bronchitis and pneumonia. Additionally, passive smoking can exacerbate existing conditions such as asthma, leading to more frequent attacks and worsening symptoms.

According to Dr. Modi, to protect yourself from the harmful effects of passive smoking, it is very important to implement some precautionary measures:

First, avoid spending time in environments where smoking is permitted, such as bars or designated smoking areas. Choose smoke-free establishments whenever possible.

Encourage family members or roommates who smoke to smoke outside away from doors and windows. Improving indoor air quality can be beneficial by using an air purifier.

Additionally, promoting smoke-free policies in public spaces and supporting initiatives to reduce smoking prevalence are necessary steps to protect against passive smoking. By taking these precautions, you can reduce your exposure to secondhand smoke and protect your health.
