China on Monday said the election of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s third supreme leader was a decision in line with the country’s constitution.
At a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun responded to queries regarding recent media reports on the leadership change in Iran.
Iran’s Assembly of Experts announced on Sunday that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, had been selected as the nation’s new supreme leader.
Born in 1969, Mojtaba Khamenei succeeds his father following reports that Ali Khamenei was killed in joint U.S.-Israeli strikes. Guo said China has noted media coverage of the event and highlighted the constitutional basis of the decision.
