The 2025 Ashes series between Australia and England witnessed a historic first on the opening day of the first Test in Perth. For the first time in 143 years of Ashes history, both teams lost their first wickets at zero runs.
England won the toss and elected to bat first. On the final ball of the very first over, Mitchell Starc dismissed England’s Zak Crawley, sending him back to the pavilion without scoring. The English side was bowled out for 172 runs before the tea break.
When Australia came out to bat, debutant Jack Weddrald was dismissed without scoring on the second ball by England’s Jofra Archer, continuing the unusual start to the match.
Adding to the record-breaking day, 43,591 spectators were present at the stadium, the largest crowd ever to attend a Test match in Perth. This surpasses last year’s record when 32,368 fans attended the second day of the Australia-India Test.
The unprecedented combination of historic wickets and record attendance has made the opening day of the Ashes 2025 a memorable event in cricket history.
