Moroccan and Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi was named African Footballer of the Year at the 2025 CAF Awards held in Rabat. Hakimi became the first defender in 52 years to win the award, finishing ahead of prominent players Mohamed Salah and Victor Osimhen.
Hakimi had an exceptional 2025 season, scoring a total of 61 goals, including 27 for PSG, helping the club secure multiple trophies such as the UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1, Coupe de France, and UEFA Super Cup. Despite a severe ankle injury, Hakimi attended the ceremony to accept the award, describing the honour as a major milestone for himself and aspiring footballers across Africa.
This is the first time a Moroccan player has won the accolade since Mustapha Hadji in 1998 and the first defender to receive it since Bwanga Tshimen of Zaire in 1973. Hakimi’s contributions were instrumental in PSG’s treble-winning season and also supported Morocco’s preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations.
During the ceremony, Hakimi expressed gratitude for the support he received during his recovery and reiterated his determination to achieve further success in upcoming international tournaments. The event also celebrated Moroccan football, with Ghizlane Chebbak named Women’s African Player of the Year and other Moroccan players recognised for their performances.
