SHC halts KMC from collecting municipal tax in cantonment areas

1 min read

The Sindh High Court has barred the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) from collecting municipal tax (MUCT) through electricity bills in cantonment areas.

The decision came during a hearing regarding the collection of municipal taxes from residents of the Malir Cantonment Board. The petitioner’s lawyer argued that the Malir Cantonment Board is already collecting the conservancy tax, and KMC had added municipal charges to electricity bills, resulting in double taxation.

The lawyer, Usman Advocate, emphasized that two separate authorities were collecting municipal taxes simultaneously.

Following the arguments, the court directed K-Electric to stop collecting MUCT through electricity bills in cantonment areas and confirmed that municipal tax collection in these areas falls under the jurisdiction of the cantonment boards.
