The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has highlighted severe water scarcity in Balochistan, noting that only seven percent of the province’s land is currently under cultivation.
According to the ADB report, a new digital water and weather monitoring system has been established in Balochistan to provide accurate information for better water management. Automatic weather stations are now supplying precise data on rainfall, temperature, and wind speed, enabling farmers to optimize irrigation schedules. The system has helped reduce water wastage and increase agricultural productivity.
The report further states that the digital system can now provide early warnings for floods and droughts, giving the government reliable data for fair water distribution and improved management.
ADB noted that the project has improved coordination and planning among different departments. After training, local communities have also gained the ability to operate and maintain these systems independently.
The report added that new dams and canal systems have significantly improved water availability for irrigation, while solar-powered drip irrigation systems are saving water and enhancing agricultural stability in the province.
