Pakistan has successfully produced and delivered large-scale, environmentally friendly Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) for the first time, meeting the standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), officials said.
According to a government statement, 8,722 metric tons of VLSFO were shipped from Karachi Port to a bunker barge in Singapore operated by Vitol, marking a significant milestone for the country’s maritime industry.
Officials noted that the domestic production and regular supply of IMO-compliant VLSFO is a major achievement for Pakistan’s energy sector. The initiative is expected to strengthen the international credibility of the country’s ports and reduce environmental impact on coastal and marine ecosystems by using cleaner fuel.
The success is attributed to coordinated efforts by the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Maritime Affairs and various government departments, ensuring the entire production and delivery process adheres to global standards.
Prior to this, Vitol had assessed collaboration opportunities in Pakistan’s maritime sector, including barge operations and other key areas. Authorities said domestic production and supply of eco-friendly marine fuel positions Pakistan as a reliable and competitive player in regional maritime trade.
