Punjab has established a high-powered parliamentary committee to investigate losses caused by the recent floods, assess the scale of damage, and recommend a comprehensive strategy for rehabilitation and future disaster prevention.
According to the notification issued by the Punjab Assembly Secretariat, the committee will be headed by PPP’s Syed Ali Haider Gilani and will include 24 members of the provincial assembly. The committee has been given 30 days to complete its report.
The panel will examine flood-related losses to agriculture, livestock, and infrastructure, and will also estimate damages suffered by affected communities. In addition, it will investigate the factors that led to the loss of human lives during the floods.
The committee will develop recommendations for the rehabilitation of flood victims and review the performance of government departments and administrative bodies involved in flood response operations. It will also propose measures to prevent future flooding.
The terms of reference further state that the committee will analyze coordination between the Punjab government and the federal government during the disaster. It will also identify steps needed to strengthen the early warning system ahead of potential floods.
The committee has the authority to summon experts and stakeholders to assist in preparing its findings and recommendations.
