Beijing urges end to double standards in counter-terrorism

China has called on the international community to firmly reject selective approaches and double standards in combating terrorism, urging stronger cooperation to eliminate conditions that foster extremism, including conflicts, poverty and violations of civilizational diversity.

Speaking at a briefing on the report of the UN Secretary-General regarding the implementation of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, China’s Permanent Representative to the UN Fu Cong said the strategy has played a pivotal role over the past two decades in preventing and combating terrorism, strengthening member states’ capacities, and enhancing global cooperation.

Fu reaffirmed China’s support for the United Nations in continuing to play its central and coordinating role in global counter-terrorism efforts.

He noted that terrorism is increasingly linked with armed conflict, transnational organized crime, social inequality, and the misuse of emerging technologies, warning that these interconnected challenges pose serious risks to international peace and security.

Fu urged the Afghan authorities to take concrete measures to ensure the country does not again become a hub for terrorist organizations. He also called on Syria’s transitional government to take decisive action against all Security Council-listed terrorist groups and prevent the use of its territory to threaten other states.

Referring to terrorist attacks in Pakistan, Fu said the Security Council should promptly add the Balochistan Liberation Army and its Majeed Brigade to the 1267 Sanctions List, and urged deeper cooperation with African countries and regional bodies, including the African Union, to strengthen counter-terrorism capacity.

The ambassador said China places high importance on implementing the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and has actively engaged in bilateral and multilateral cooperation, supporting related projects in Africa and Central Asia through the China-UN Peace and Development Fund.

He added that China stands ready to participate constructively in the upcoming ninth review of the strategy and work with all parties toward lasting global peace and universal security.
