The Special Communication Organization (SCO) has established 100 modern IT centres across Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), in what officials describe as a historic step toward accelerating digital transformation in the region.
According to official information, the initiative launched under the strategic guidance of Pakistan’s military leadership and the vision of the Director General SCO—has opened a new chapter of development in AJK. The newly developed IT hubs and software technology parks are already benefiting youth in Muzaffarabad, Bagh, Bhimber, Dadyal, Kotli, Mirpur, Rawalakot and Hajira.
The software technology parks and freelancing hubs have become key drivers of economic empowerment, providing young people with training, high-speed internet, collaborative spaces and access to digital markets. SCO has also set up 49 freelancing hubs in remote areas, creating fresh opportunities for employment and skill development.
Muzaffarabad is now home to Pakistan’s first women-only software technology park, which has quickly emerged as a symbol of women’s empowerment in the region. SCO has also established a special freelancing hub for persons with disabilities, a move widely welcomed as a step toward greater digital inclusion. The organization has additionally provided a free dedicated vehicle for persons with disabilities as part of its social support initiatives.
Officials say that all technology parks and IT hubs offer state-of-the-art facilities, uninterrupted power supply and high-speed internet to ensure reliable digital infrastructure.
More than 400 young people in AJK are directly benefiting from SCO’s development programmes, while over 500 successful freelancers have become financially independent and are contributing to the national economy. These initiatives have reportedly generated USD 20 million in revenue, marking a significant step toward Pakistan’s digital self-reliance.
