The Lahore High Court (LHC) has constituted a three-member full bench to hear petitions challenging the 27th Constitutional Amendment, officials said on Monday.
The full bench, headed by Justice Sadaqat Ali Khan, includes Justice Jawad Hassan and Justice Sultan Tanveer. The petitions have named the Prime Minister and the Speaker of the National Assembly as respondents through their secretaries.
Petitioners argue that the amendment has diluted the original powers of the Supreme Court, effectively turning it into a federal constitutional court, weakening judicial authority and threatening judicial independence. They also claim the changes violate Islamic provisions, judicial autonomy, and fundamental rights, and were made without provincial consultation or public input from lawyers, civil society, journalists, and other stakeholders.
The petitions seek a ruling declaring the 27th Constitutional Amendment null and void and request the court to suspend its implementation until a final decision is issued.
