Five newly constructed double-storey barracks have been completed at Kot Lakhpat Jail, significantly expanding capacity and improving inmate facilities.

The new barracks were inaugurated by Chairman of the Task Force Rana Manan Khan and Punjab Home Secretary Dr. Ahmed Javed Qazi. According to the Punjab Home Department spokesperson, the facility can now accommodate 2,000 additional prisoners.

During their visit, the chairman and home secretary spoke to inmates to learn about their concerns. They instructed jail authorities to provide free legal aid to all prisoners who cannot afford private lawyers.

The home secretary further directed officials to ensure warm blankets are distributed in all barracks as winter approaches. He also emphasized regular interaction between the jail psychologist and inmates suffering from mental health issues to ensure ongoing counselling.

The Punjab Home Secretary revealed that more than 850 citizens have so far used the meeting app to book appointments with imprisoned relatives. The online advance booking facility is now available across all jails in Punjab.
