LHC Judge Shams Mahmood Mirza resigns amid controversy

1 min read

Justice Shams Mahmood Mirza of the Lahore High Court has submitted his resignation to the President of Pakistan, following in the footsteps of senior Supreme Court judges Mansoor Ali Shah and Athar Minallah.

Sources said Justice Mirza quietly visited his chambers, cleared his office, and left without any official protocol. He had taken oath as an Additional Judge of the Lahore High Court on March 22, 2014, and was due to retire in 2028.

Justice Mirza is the son of former Supreme Court judge Justice Zia Mahmood Mirza. He was also a member of the Lahore High Court’s administrative committee. Following the 27th Constitutional Amendment, there had been speculation about his possible transfer.

Earlier this year, in January, a reference was filed against Justice Shams Mahmood Mirza before the Supreme Judicial Council by a government lawyer, adding to the context of his resignation.
